Memento Mori
by Dallas Vakarian
Date: Sep 5 – Sep 18Space: Workshop
A selection of object/still life acrylic paintings exploring themes of nostalgia and memento mori (a Latin phrase meaning “remember you must die”).
In this mini exhibition, Napier based artist Dallas Vakarian Wilcox paints objects that remind her of death – such as her late grandmother’s perfume, and the vintage cat figurines that “guard” the ashes of her childhood cat. Reminders of death don’t always have to be morbid and dark – sometimes they can be cheerful, serving as reminders of a joyful life just as much as the inevitable end of it.
Also on display are works from Dallas’ first solo exhibition ‘Trash & Treasure’ – featuring colourful, semi surreal still life works focused on identity, nostalgia, and everyday objects.
