Kate White

The Rook Story

Date: Apr 26 – May 9Space: Small Gallery

‘The Rook Story’ exhibition by Kate White is a visual unfolding of the little book written by the artist’s daughter in 2021.  This latest collection of images includes oil paintings and drawings on recycled pallet wood and rubbish wood found in skips analogous to the new trend of treating imported animals as redundant to the retro-engineered scenery.  The works depict rooks brought, without their permission, to New Zealand in 1862, and capture their character and beauty in an attempt to tell their story before they are gone.

Exhibition opens 5pm Friday 26th April | All curious welcome!

Kate White has worked as an illustrator, portrait artist and fine artist since the 1980s here, in NZ, and in England, Scotland and Ireland. She holds a NZ Certificate in Craft Design from EIT and an Hons Dip Art and Creativity from The Learning Connexion, Wellington.

Kate has always been interested in the story of the underdogs in nature and draws her inspiration from generally moving against the mainstream, sometimes just to make people think, and sometimes because of her passion about injustice.  Her style is largely illustrative, though she dabbles in the surreal. She works in oils, acrylics, watercolours, pastels and graphite and makes pieces that range from small wares for her market stall: The Rooky Wood, through to larger serious art.

Her achievements include 8 solo and 2 duo exhibitions, all held in Hawke’s Bay at: Statements Gallery, the Globe, Creative Arts Napier and Heretaunga Arts Inc; and over 40 national and local group exhibitions including the Parkin Drawing Awards, the NZ Portrait Gallery, the Hawke’s Bay Reviews and the Big Apple Project. Among other art jobs Kate has drawn the Auckland Thoroughbred Racing yearly Derby winner’s portrait for Ellerslie Racecourse for the past 11 years, and worked full-time as a publisher’s illustrator in Ireland for 4 years.

The near future of her work will, likely, entail a continuation of bringing awareness to the story of those who have no voice in the current politicised environmentalism. This year Kate has another exhibition coming up at Heretaunga Arts Inc from 19th-31st August, is working on a mural and has a queue of portraits, along with running her market stall at the Te Awanga, Waipukurau and upcoming Hawke’s Bay Christmas Markets.

Kate dedicates everything she does to her Creator YHWH.
