Kare
A Matariki Exhibition
Date: Jun 30 – Jul 27Space: Small Gallery
A celebration of wahinetanga as Matariki rises
“creativity to me is like kai, like aroha, it is best shared” – te aho jordan
Kare is a multi-directional, multi-layered karanga – a stirring call across time, space, and artforms. Bringing together eleven wāhine artists, from different backgrounds and mediums, to share and hold space for one another throughout Matariki, Kare’s steely focus is fixed, ka mua ka muri – while one note acknowledges the past, another welcomes the future.
Beckoning its community in curator Putaanga Waitoa’s distinctly wahine Māori voice, Kare is a clear, resounding call for change, echoing across the contemporary art spaces of Te Matau-a-Māui and beyond.
Kare is a call to action. It’s a call to dream and reflect on our place within the universe and our communities, to gather and celebrate the strength and creativity which abounds when wāhine come together, and to support and be nourished by what will become an annual exhibition.
