Kami Bay Batik Workshops
Traditional cloth dying
Date: Apr 9 – Apr 9Space: Workshop
Kami Bay the Hawke’s Bay Indonesia Community is bringing the traditional and ancient artform of Batik to the Hawke’s Bay community with two workshops on April 9. The participants will learn directly from the workshop tutor how to make conventional batik, a technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to the whole cloth.
Traditional batik is made by drawing dots or lines with wax which resist the dye thereby creating it’s unique pattern. This wax is applied with a spouted tool called a canting. When the applied wax resists dyes it allows the artisan to color selectively by soaking the cloth in one colour, removing the wax with boiling water, and repeating if multiple colors are desired.
