Emara Whaanga

Wisdom Keeper

Date: Jun 1 – Jun 30Space: Foyer

Also in our foyer we are proud to welcome back Emara Whaanga with her latest collection. Her minimalist work focusing on the feminine form is both evoking and modern. Her use of bold colours and fine lines in these studies of wahine creates softness, strength and beauty.

“Just like the moon cycles and her different phases and faces. Our life cycles. We flow in and out of different versions of ourselves. Acquiring wisdom and knowledge. Returning deeper and deeper into our innate knowing with every shift. These images images occupy 12 states of my being, 12 versions of myself.

Take a moment, with each image, ground yourself, allow your energy to enter into a space of present time, take a deep breath and breathe out, entering into your life force energy.
These pieces our reminder on the first month of the Maramataka to Connect. Release. Align. Set. Heal. Evolve.
Be your highest potential.” Emara

Artist Statement

Born in Stokes Valley, grew up and currently live in Te Matau a Maui.
In the magic of the night under the energy of Hinemarama I become a vessel extension of my creative endeavours. Amongst the ebbs and flows of life by day I work as learning support for tamariki in school. But first and foremost I am a mama to my four beautiful starseeds. Who all also whakapapa to Samoa, Tonga and Niue. An explosive energy of divine indigenous beings. Gently guided by our tipuna.

My creative influences come from the many versions of me that I have lived. And all that existed within those spaces. In this era, I have finally heard the karanga of my tipuna to be released from the belief that I am anything lesser than what I know myself to be. I have all the energy and magic that our Atua possess.
I am free to express the seen and the unseen, the spoken and the withheld.

Being brave in my exploration of expression. Delving into the deepest parts of me and unearthing its limitless potential. Aligning with my highest path.

Emara’s latest works are available to view and purchase in the CAN foyer 1 – 30 June 2024.
