As Māori arts practitioners we are exploring the term UTU, and how often it is defined as ‘revenge’, UTU has a much broader meaning: fundamental Māori concept of reciprocity, balance, harmony, mana (prestige, integrity) or exchange and so much more.
In this exhibition we look closely at the positive aspects of how we use UTU in the context as authentic māori artists to encourage fairness and mutual respect in the community.
Often, we see our culture of mahi toi (artworks) and taonga (treasures) being produced and or for sale by non-māori everywhere not only here in Aotearoa New Zealand but worldwide.
After numerous discussions we believe more awareness and or conversations should be considered when producing, selling or buying as many people take it for granted if it looks māori then it’s made by māori.
UTU reinforces trust and fosters sustainable partnerships. All artworks have been carefully crafted respecting our māori core values and each piece has been blessed in the making.
The exhibition will showcase Pūrākau (stories) of Kawakawa (plant species) and Raranga (weaving) as it pertains to our creations. Honouring our past traditions and proudly moving forward… ia rā, ia wiki, ia tau (every day, every week, every year)
Guaranteed authentic and unapologetically Māori.
