The Architecture of Memory

by Christie Hay

Date: Nov 27 – Dec 24Space: Workshop

Contemporary abstracts exploring memory, place, and belonging.

The Architecture of Memory is a collection of contemporary abstract works exploring the ways memory, place and belonging are constructed, fragmented and remembered.

Drawing from architectural forms, organic shapes, pattern and repetition, the paintings bring together seemingly disparate fragments into new visual landscapes. Blocks, arches, grids, stripes and layered surfaces suggest pieces of places and experiences that have been retained, altered or reassembled over time.

The works move between structure and fluidity — between the ordered and the organic — reflecting the imperfect nature of memory itself. Colours, textures and repeated forms become visual traces: fragments of familiarity that can shift, overlap and transform. Rather than depicting a specific place, the collection explores the emotional architecture of place — how environments become embedded within us and how memories of them continue to evolve.

Together, the works form a visual language of fragmentation, connection and reconstruction, inviting the viewer to consider their own relationship with memory, home and belonging.

Opening Night: Friday 27th November 2026 – 5-7pm

About the artist:

Christie Hay is a contemporary artist and designer with a Bachelor of Visual Art and Design and a professional background in Digital Marketing.

Her creative practice sits at the intersection of art, design and visual communication, where colour, pattern and composition become ways of exploring ideas and experiences.

Christie’s current body of work, The Architecture of Memory, explores memory, place and belonging through fragmented forms, layered surfaces and abstract pattern. Drawing on both organic and architectural structures, she creates compositions that feel simultaneously familiar and imagined — like fragments of places remembered rather than directly observed.

Alongside her art practice, Christie works in digital marketing and content creation, bringing an understanding of visual storytelling, communication and contemporary design into her creative process. Her work is ultimately driven by a fascination with how the things we experience become internal landscapes — and how those landscapes can be translated back into colour, shape and form.
