Spaces & Costs

The CAN has various spaces available for hire for exhibitions, workshops, classes, meetings, performances and events you name it! Our aim is to be as flexible as possible so please talk to us if you have special requirements.

Each space has it’s own qualities and we have six spaces available for hire.

Main Gallery

The Main Gallery is our largest space measuring 14 metres x 7 metres. The gallery offers high ceilings, adjustable spot-lighting, lovely natural light and a beautiful polished wooden floor.

For conferences, it holds 80 seated facing the front (stage optional), or 48 seated around 8 tables of 6.

Small Gallery

This room was used for council chamber meetings during the 1800’s when the building housed the Napier Borough Council.

Measuring 6 metres x 4 metres this area is perfect for your first exhibition with large windows letting in plenty of natural light.  For a small meeting it will seat up to 20.

Mezzanine

The mezzanine area is an excellent space for smaller exhibitions or groups. Depending on the activity, it will seat approx. 20.

Workshop Area

Our workshop area has a hard floor designed for a variety of activities from painting to printing, sculpting to drama. It can seat up to 50 facing front (stage optional) or less if seated around tables. There is also a wash-out area to clean up afterwards.

Foyer Spaces

We have two foyer spaces for hire, for which we like to call ‘micro-exhibitions’. These are available to rent for a month at a time.  Displaying your work in one of these spaces is a great way to have your first ever solo exhibition, and you are guaranteed your work will be seen by everyone who enters the building! Pop in and take a look. These spaces book up well in advance however, so we advise early booking.

Kitchen

We also offer a small fully-equipped kitchen to cater for exhibitions openings, meetings and social events as well as the daily needs of the CAN, like coffee! Outside catering is also available.
