Scratching the Surface
Ceramics by Scott Brough and Karen Greenslade
Date: Oct 26 – Nov 8Space: Small Gallery
An exhibition showing the ceramic artwork of Scott Brough and Karen Greenslade, who are final year students studying the Diploma of Ceramic Arts with Otago Polytechnic.
Scott and Karen have been studying ceramic art with Otago Polytech for the last 4 years. They have been learning the skills needed to work with clay as well exploring the wide world of contemporary art and ceramics through the ages. All their experiences and learning come together in this exhibition – which is a display of very individual work from both students created over the last year of self-directed study.
Scott focuses on making functional pieces for displaying and serving food and drink – objects that people can share and bond with over time. He says he likes to work directly and playfully, using simple processes that preserve the marks of the hand and the memory of the materials.
Karen has been exploring the human form in clay sculpture. Karen says people fascinate her and she makes pieces that show how unique we all are. “I try to create characters that engage the viewer and tell a story”. She hand-builds her work with minimal tools as touch helps her work instinctively and helps her capture the spirit of the person in her work. Texture and colour are also important features in her work.
