Pieces of Me

Ceramic Sculpture by Julie-Marie Beere

Date: Mar 29 – Apr 30Space: Foyer

‘Pieces of Me’ showcases a small collection of some of Julie-Marie’s work made in recent years.  Her inspiration comes from many things in the world, both man made and organic, including nature, quotes, religion, architecture, popular culture, children’s stories, fashion and history.

Julie-Marie is a kiwi girl born in Wellington but raised here in the beautiful Hawkes Bay and now lives in Napier with her two children.  With no formal art training, it wasn’t until she moved to Auckland in her 30’s that she began taking an interest in art.  She felt such an energy ‘high’ every time she visited an art gallery that it really was no surprise when that energy materialized in form soon after.  Julie-Marie took the plunge and made a mixed media waka – perhaps symbolizing her journey into the sea of the unknown.

Four years later while living in Cambridge Julie-Marie began carving Hinuera stone.  As much as she loved the finished product of stone, its smash, bash, grind reducing process began to frustrate her.  She found herself wanting to build up and add to, if she so desired, instead of taking away.  Unsatisfactory pieces could not be reconstituted or reworked either.  Clay, on the other hand, affords us that luxury, so she turned her sculpting hands to clay and six years later she is still here.

One of the things Julie-Marie loves about clay is the endless learning.  This medium comes in so many textures and colours and can be moulded and pushed and turned into innumerable shapes.  Following that, the various glazes and different firing options make for a myriad of outcomes. I challenge myself to try different building techniques with my most recent being layering different clays to produce organic ‘forms’, inspiration from the evolving earth, clay and rock layers.

This is Julie-Marie’s first exhibition and includes both her most recent work and some of her earlier pieces. She is largely self-taught but would like to acknowledge and thank all the people who have generously contributed their knowledge, expertise and encouragement over the years.

Please feel very welcome to help Julie-Marie celebrate the opening of her exhibition on Thursday 29 March, 5-7pm.
