New Paintings

by Matt Davidson

Date: Feb 16 – Mar 1Space: Small Gallery

Matt Davidson’s paintings align abstraction with processes of layered construction to create a rhythmic balance between colour and space. Using rollers, brushes, and palette knives, he layers paint into strict geometries that create visual tension and harmony. His paintings are spatial, even sculptural, using contrast and scale to create compositional stability within taped-off fields of acrylic colour.

Toying with both surface texture and optical effects, Matt’s newest work is informed by an ingrained sense of order, precision and structure.

Matt Davidson is a Hawke’s Bay local, having grown up and lived in Napier for most of his life. He left Hawke’s Bay in his teens to study, travel and work, before returning to Napier where he has now settled. Matt began painting in his thirties after a long period of work as a Graphic Designer.

The paintings in this exhibition have been completed between mid-2017 and early 2018.

Meet Matt at his opening on Friday 16 February, 5-7pm. All welcome!
